Cindy Farlino is serving in her 8th year as Principal of the William Meredith Elementary School.
Cindy began her involvement with education as an active parent in the Home and School Association at Feltonville Elementary School. She led the initiative among parents in the Feltonville community, who sought to establish a neighborhood middle school, to avoid having their children bussed to the far northeast. In response, the School District established Central East Middle School for middle grade students in Feltonville (now Feltonville Arts and Sciences). The parent group interviewed and recommended a Principal, who was appointed, and they reviewed curriculum and recommended books, which were purchased.
At age 40, Cindy enrolled in the graduate school of education at University of Pennsylvania and received her masters and teaching certification.
During her 25 years with the School District of Philadelphia, Cindy first taught middle grade students, and then became an Assistant Principal, both in north Philadelphia, at the Feltonville Arts and Sciences Middle School. In 2005, she was appointed as Director of Instruction for the South Region which involved overseeing the academic programs at 39 schools.
Prior to working for the School District, Cindy was involved in organizing workers around health and safety issues. She served as President of her union at Progress Lighting Corp.
As a founding member of the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, Cindy continues to use her passion for education and with the idea that the empowerment of students, with families and with staff, create vibrant schools.
